Why Coaching, not Maths Tuition?
It may seem strange to advertise as a Maths coach, rather than as a private tutor, but after six years experience as a home tutor I realised that with Maths, many of the problems that students face are similar to those of athletes :
- Just as with sport, performance is linked to confidence and one of my main goals as a Maths coach is to increase confidence through carefully selecting exercises of the right difficulty.
- Often, low confidence is linked to the student missing one or two fundamental elements of understanding, which can then prevent them from attempting more complicated problems. After all, if you haven't learned to walk, it would be fairly daunting to be asked to walk a tightrope! As a coach I aim to identify any fundamental gaps early on and address them.
- All students have their own strengths and preferred ways of thinking. It is my role as a coach to help the student find the approach they are most comfortable with. I then work with the student to write a method for each approach in their 'Tactics' book to help them remember.
- As with fitness, it takes consistent hard work to achieve progress in Maths and therefore it is critical to develop a program of exercises that are suitably challenging, but most importantly, fun and varied. I set students a variety of puzzles, challenges and games (even computer games sometimes), as well as written exercises to keep it interesting.
